
The Colosseum was first started by the emperor Vespasian and it was completed in 80 AD, during the reign under Domitian. It was the first amphitheater to be built in Rome. Its magnificent size and efficient architecture was able to organize the people at once. The circus and gladiator provided an entertainment to the people, but at the same time, it controlled their mental to combat.
Colosseum used to hold up to at least 40,000 around a central elliptical arena. Arena means the sand. It is about 620 feet in length by over 500 in width. The arena itself is about 290 feet by 180 feet. Currently, only walls are left at the center of the monument, however there used be a wooden boards supporting by 80 walls and sand were scattered to make combat area. Below the wooden arena floor, there were rooms and passageways for wild beasts, gladiator, and prisoners.
The structure of Colosseum took deep care of the spectator and player. In the past, the huge pavilion used to be installed at the top of the monument to create shade. There is evidence of 250 columns that were used to set up the pavilion. The architecture did not allow the sunlight to the spectators no more than 20minutes and it enabled the audience to enjoy a show. The entering method at the time is still applied to current stadium system.
Rome constantly repaired the Colosseum as the time went on, but earthquakes and pillaging kept destroying the monument and frustrated the people. At lat, the emperor stopped repairing the Colosseum. The grand size monument that used to be pleasure for the citizens is now has becomes ruined and sightseeing for a tourist.
